Frequently Asked Questions
Where do we meet?
Our tour meets and ends at The Robinson Lake Bar and Resort at 51825 Fahrner Rd, Barnes Wisconsin
How many people can go kayaking?
We can accomodate up to 10 people per tour. Most of our kayaks are two person tandems but if you have an odd number of people we will put one person in a solo kayak.
How much does it cost?
Our trip cost is $65 per adult, $55 per teen (13-17), and $50 for kids 12 and under.
What does the trip involve?
The trip will start out with a 10-15 minute paddle instruction and safety talk that takes place on shore, before we get in the kayaks. Then we will paddle to and from our destination. Trips are typically 2 1/2 hours in duration and about 4 miles.
Who can go?
While our trips are for almost anybody and no previous experience is necessary our trips are not like an amusement park ride: your effort and cooperation are needed. If you can’t paddle or don’t want to then our trips aren’t for you. All children need to be ages 3 and up. Anyone under the age of 18 needs to be accompanied by their parents or a guardian.
Why go kayaking with Up North Kayaks?
Well trained guides with years of experience. Our guides are from the region but most have traveled and/or guided in other regions. We have taken the best of what we have seen and experienced and applied it to our trips. Specialized training and certifications. Our guides regularly partake in training courses specific to kayak and water rescue. All guides are also CPR and first aid certified. Education and knowledge of local ecosystems where trips take place. From geology to history to flora and fauna of the region, we know it, love it, and share it with you. You are special: we don’t operate like a kayaking paddle factory in a hurry to get you out and on to the next customer. Our goal is to offer a unique, quality experience. We encourage everyone to be fully in the moment and enjoy their surroundings. You don't have to come with us but, you'd be a lot cooler if you did!
Do we need prior paddling or kayaking experience?
No prior paddling or kayaking experience is required as we have professional guides accompanying you for the whole trip. You do need to be physically able to paddle and mentally able to understand and follow directions.
Do we have to paddle a lot?
A lot is a relative term, but you do need to put in an effort. This is not an amusement park ride. At times we will paddle easy and other times we will need to push a bit to successfully navigate wind or waves. We do take a couple of breaks along the way.
What should we wear to go kayaking?
Most of our trips happen during the warmer summer months so for the most part, dress like you're going to the beach for a swim. Kayaking is a water sport so plan on getting wet. On hot sunny days we usually wear long sleeved sun protection shirts mostly to prevent sunburn. Otherwise, load on the sunscreen. You'll thank us later! For footwear, we recommend water shoes or sandals that strap around the heel. Flip flops aren't really ideal as they can easily slip off and get lost. Some people do go barefoot but keep in mind that when we get out of the kayaks at a break point, it may be a little rocky so it may be nice to have something to put on your feet! For colder conditions, during early or late season trips, you want to dress in layers. For your base layer polyester or fleece, long underwear is best. No cotton as it loses its insulating properties once wet. For your insulating layer, wool or fleece is ideal as it can get wet and still insulate. For your external layer, you want something like Gortex to shed water and stop the wind.
How long is the trip?
Depending on wind conditions the trip is typically 2 ½ hours long. Larger groups can take a little bit longer but typically 3 hours is the maximum time.
Can I wear a GO-PRO?
Yes you can!
Can I fly a drone?
We ask that you leave the drone at home. As drone operators ourselves, we have found that flying a drone from a moving water vessel is challenging to say the least. We have had mishaps in the past with lost or water dameaged drones and would prefer to not have anymore in the future. We have also found that not everyone likes to be filmed with a drone, it detracts from the tour and is can be disruptive to wildlife.
Can we party?
We want everyone to have fun but you CANNOT be under the influence of alcohol or drugs on our trips. Not only can this cause unnecessary danger to yourself but to others as well. There are enough variables to try to manage risk while in a water and wilderness setting that being of an altered mental state exemplifies that risk too much. Once the trip is over, then visit the Robinson Lake Bar for great food, adult beverages and additional good times!
